July 6th,
Nintendo held a competition to promote their newest release.
Super Smash Brothers Brawl on the Nintendo Wii.
The competition was on its 3rd day of tour, and participants had gathered there as early as 8am, even though the even would begin at 10am.
I rocked up around 9:30 and lined with a friend of mine ( i had no conscience that day, usually i would have found it wrong to jump into the line, but it never occured to me that day ) and I ended up being registrant 30.
This was the 2nd tournament I entered for this event, the previous being on the 4th, in which I just tested the waters to see how it worked and what I would be facing on the coming sunday.
FIRST ROUND.
Jigglypuff Vs Random (Sonic) Vs Ike Vs Ness ( me ).
It was a 2 minute match, in which the player with the highest score would progress.
I knocked Ike out within 10 seconds and aimed for Sonic for the rest of the match, since the Jigglypuff player was a little 4 year old girl ( sif take advantage of that ), so I did the only logical thing to do, which was leave the Jigglypuff alone. The other players we’re much mature than me, so it was fine to harras them.
My tactic was, jump around and avoid their attacks and when they we’re free I’d use my bat on them or spike down on them, but my main offensive move was my Pk Flash and Pk Thunder (tackle). I had’nt been knocked out yet and there was only 40 seconds remaining. My score was +2, but my damage ratio was already nearing the 200% mark, but then Ike hit me and I flew off the stage ( which was Pokemon Stadium 2 ) and as I tried to Pk Thunder my way back, the nerves hit me and i completely missed my character and fell to my death.
With 20secs left, I started Pk tackling my way into the fight. But I was not able to knock any opponents out, instead I got knocked out, and so did Jigglypuff. But Jigglypuffs death was awarded to me.
With 13 seconds left, I Spawned and collected the 3 pieces of dragoon, but missed.
In the last 10 seconds, the smash ball appeared and Ike and Sonic started chasing after it.
Luckily a sword was spawned where I landed and I picked it up and threw it at the smash ball, which I got and used instantly. Resulting in the KO of the 3 opponents.
My score turning into +5 and only several seconds remaining.
I just kept taunting.
SECOND ROUND.
I don’t remember, but I won by 3.
THIRD ROUND.
I don’t recall, my opponents we’re too insignificant. (cocky!)
All I remember was, opponent got Landmaster, and I died once from it and then during a frantic battle, I picked up a warp star and knocked all 3 out.
The commentator announced, “HOW DID NESS MANAGE TO PULL THAT OFF, SUCH ACCURACY!”
Cause I used the aimed the warp star inbetween two platforms, I think it was in the Battlefield stage.
*cocky!*
SEMIFINALS.
It was a 3 way free for all.
I was pretty nervous, since if I won this I’d be in the finals!
It was Ness (me), vs Marth vs Metaknight.
3 stock, with 1.5 damage ratio.
I wasn’t able to get any kills, since their swords just blew me off stage easily.
BUT, the announcer requested for all the semifinalist runner-ups to stay, since they we’re short 1 player in the finals, which required 4 players.
So with that, the 6 Runner-Ups we’re split into 2 groups of 3.
LUCKY LOSER FIGHT 1.
It was, Snake vs Sonic vs Ness.
I was particularly wary of the Sonic player, as he had been progressing through the tournament fairly well, and specifically to the fact the he was able to control Super Sonic very accurately!
The stage was Pokemon Stadium.
3 Stock.
Sonic got a hold of the first smash ball, which resulted in me losing 1 stock, and helping kill out snake.
So with me having 2 stock and sonic having 2 stock.
It was a fairly even match.
Sonic out matched me in damages as he was able to move faster and was able to get me in damage rolls.
My only strength was, being able to use my high damage move Pk thunder tackle (over and over again).
The 2nd Smash Ball spawned, and Sonic raced for it. But, I was able to attain it by using my Pk Thunder.
UNFORTUNATELY! Sonic was able to dodge my Pk Starstorm, which was a total bummer.
But, with that gone, I need to gain an advantage, and I was able to knock him out by using my Pk Flash and then using my UP Spike.
With Sonic with 1 Stock and me having 2 stock but really high damage, I had the slight advantage.
But then, the 3rd smash ball appeared!
And Sonic was able to get it, leaving me prone to his ultimate move.
Prior to me being knocked out, the stage had transformed into the stage with the Windmill.
Using the windmill to my advantage, I moved around the windmill, while Sonic tried to attack me in his Super Sonic form. (THANK YOU WINDMILL). During this time, sonic was able to hit me at least 3 times, while i dodged several times, but his accuracy controlling Super Sonic was .. superb, he was able to home in on me pretty much the whole time.
So as his Smash Attack faded, we we’re both left in a high damage ratio state.
What ever, move we would do would decide the game.
My choices were, distract him with a PK Flash?
But that would leave me prone to attack.
Wait for an item to spawn to throw at him?
But he might get the item and throw it at me.
Pk Thunder tackle?
He might dodge and finish me off in my prone stage.
But I took the gamble and decided to Pk Thunder Tackle Sonic.
So I jumped around to try and get him confused, and when he was charging at me from a far I jumped back off the stage and used my Pk Thunder.
Pk Thunder, has around a 3 second circulation delay which leaves Ness pretty much prone to anything.
So Sonic was jumping towards me trying to finish me off, but it payed off, and my Pk thunder connected and END GAME.
LUCKY LOSER FINALS.
It was 1 vs 1.
I HATE 1 vs 1!!
Marth vs Ness.
3 Stock.
Pokemon Stadium.
Marth had the clear advantage since he moved faster and had a longer reach than me. But I decided to continue to rely on my PK Thunder Tackle tactic. In which, I move around the stage avoiding all his attacks and jump off the stage which would lead them to follow me to try and knock me out or stop the pk thunder from connecting.
The opponent was silly and hardly used his shield against my Pk Thunder tackle, but instead tried to use his sword to damage me in that state.
With me having 2 stock, and him only having 1 stock left. I attempted to Pk thunder my way into the stage after he had knocked me off, but the nerves kicked in again.. and I ended up missing Ness .. again.
With 1 stock left, both having 0 damage. I stuck with my tactic, since it had been working.
Both having damage withing the 70%~ ratio, It was highly likely he would be able to finish me off, since Ness is a lighter character. Luckily! a beam sword spawned, but it was located at his side of the field. So I dashed for it and used my forward attack move which knocked him off stage. I used PK flash while he was in the air which I managed to connect which threw him to the other side of the stage. Then I picked up the sword and threw it. KO!
WIN!
With that! I was in the finals.
FINALS.
Soo, I had been standing on the stage for at least 20 minutes already, and I was scared as hell.
Looking around, everyone was crowding around all the levels of the mall leaning over balconies and what not.
My main fear was… being seen by someone I know.
LOL?!
Ok, so here is the dish.
Sure, my friends know I’m abit of a geek, nerd or whatever. BUT! Not to this extent where I would show myself in public like that. PLUS! My girlfriend recently got angry at me for playing too much DOTA. OH THE PAIN.
If DOTA got her angry… think of the chaotic result if she found out I was participating in such an event.
Anyways, thats beside the point, she will never know. xD
So yeah, I was nervous as hell, and tired from holding the controller and standing up.
..
THE FINALS.
Stage: Final Destination
Stock: 5
Players: Pikachu, Wolf, Lucas, Ness
Firstly, Wolf and Lucas, we’re brother and sister!
The girl being the lucas player, I was slightly thinking “wow shes cooool” since GG respect for the earthbound players! I was like the only Ness player in the whole competition, and there was only 3 Lucas players and she played it very well.
Wolf on the other hand, I wasn’t really fond off, since the night before at my friends house, a Wolf player had beat me silly.
Pikachu on the other hand, was gonna be plain annoying. I mean, Pikachu when used right… its really hard to go against and it has good attacks that can send opponents flying!
… So the battle.
I remained having 5 stock for the first half, and constant flew around knocking out Wolf and Lucas with my PK thunde tackle. While pikachu also maintained a high stock.
Lucas was knocked out first, with me having 4 stock and pikachu also having 4 stock and wolf only having 1 stock remaining.
Stupidly, I done that stupid move again where I miss myself with the Pk thunder and fall to my death. I wanted to swear sooooo much, but slapping my face was enough.
I respawned to Wolf and Pikachu battling it out.
Here is where it all went wrong…
It was either, knocked out Wolf and 1 vs 1 Pikachu.
OR
Aim Pikachu and let Wolf stay in game so he could damage pikachu some more.
Cockily enough, I Pk Thunder tackled Wolf, so he got knocked out.
Which left Ness 3 stock and Pikachu 4 stock.
As I mentioned before,
I HATE 1 vs 1!
Ness is way too slow, has way too short range, and has alot of moves that leave him prone to attack.
Pikachu .. physically raped me.
For the first part of the 1 vs 1.
His aeiral moves just kept damaging me, and I couldn’t lay a hit on him.
Then a Smash Ball appeared.
And Pikachu got it.
And knocked me out.
The pikachu players accuracy with the volt tackle pikachu was pretty much the same as the Sonic player.
I waited it out in respawn for it to fade, and when my platform faded I just kept jumping around and got hit several more times. Then on his prone stage, I batted pikachu out of the stage.
3 Stock Pikachu
2 Stock Ness.
Pikachu spawned.
Amazingly enough, another Smash Ball appeared.
This time, I got it.
And used it ASAP.
BUT! Pikachu avoided it all. EVERYTHING. ( Stupid PK Starstorm falling at random areas…)
Which left me prone for damage afterwards.
I started shuffling around the stage and using my dash psi attack on pikachu.
I tried to use PK Flash several times but to no avail.
Pikachu got back on stage used its down A move which sucks in the opponent and shoots them up after combo of damage. And repeatedly used its thunder attack, which juggled me across the stage to my death.
1 Stock Ness
3 Stock Pikachu
I respawned and tried to knock out pikachu, but I ended up being the one beaten up.
Then when I had the chance, I PK thunder tackled pikachu out of the arena.
1 Stock Ness
2 Stock Pikachu.
Pikachu respawned and used thunder which blew me off the arena.
A Spicy curry spawned.
And i tried to race back into the stage for it. But I missed and pikachu ended up eating it.
Instead of being doomed, I used it to my advantage and used my Psi Absorb move.
Which resulted in me being healed!
Then pikachu used its forward a attack which pushed me back.
Finally, the smash ball appeared.
I knew it was over once pikachu spammed its thunder attack.
I dodged, the first few runs at me, but to no avail.
End.
And that is my sad story.
I wanted to win, for bragging rights to my friends.
But 2nd is good enough, but not good enough at the same time.
My prize consisted of:
Super Smash Brothers Brawl (the game)
and this supposedly limtied edition super mario collectors tin which contains Yoshi and Bullet Bill.
